Most likely the turkey you eat at Christmas will be a hen. Females are slaughtered at about 15 pounds. Males (Toms) are allowed to get to 40 pounds and are used to produce deli meat.The two turkeys shown here were two that we raised and slaughtered for Thanskgiving and Christmas dinners. In a dazzling display of originality that is what we called them - Thanksgiving and Christmas.
They had the free run of our 100 acre farm which completely freaked out my wife.
